Recognizing Gender Equity in Tech: DigitalFems Wins at the First Bcn Fem Tech Awards

In May 2022, DigitalFems was proudly recognized at the inaugural Bcn Fem Tech Awards, a landmark initiative by the Barcelona City Council to spotlight and support projects advancing gender equity in the ICT sector. The organization received the Data Award for its Open Data Project on Women Technologists in Barcelona—a pioneering effort to map, document, and celebrate the contributions of women shaping the city’s tech ecosystem.

Why Visibility Matters

The Bcn Fem Tech Awards were created with a clear goal: to challenge the gender digital divide by amplifying the work of women and gender-diverse individuals in digital and tech fields. The awards not only offer recognition but also funding—supporting the continuity and scalability of feminist-led innovation.

DigitalFems’ award-winning project addresses a critical gap: the lack of publicly available data on women in tech. By building an open-access database of women technologists in Barcelona, the project provides a vital resource for companies, researchers, and policymakers aiming to foster inclusive hiring, partnerships, and leadership. It transforms visibility into strategy, proving that what gets measured gets valued.

Highlighting a Movement, Not Just a Moment

The ceremony also celebrated other outstanding initiatives, such as:

  • Technovation Girls Catalunya, led by Adriana Aguirre Such and Stefania-Maria Kousoula, for Sischain: A Sorority Blockchain—a platform that uses blockchain to create decentralized empowerment networks for women.

  • Meritxell Bautista, founder of FIBRACAT TV, for her groundbreaking work bridging technology and media to challenge gender stereotypes and expand access.

These projects reflect the innovation, resilience, and community-building spirit of women leading change in a sector historically dominated by men.

Changing the Narrative

Despite growing awareness, women still represent only 24% of ICT professionals in Spain (source: Instituto de la Mujer). Awards like Bcn Fem Tech are essential tools for:

  • Disrupting outdated narratives about who belongs in tech.

  • Creating visible role models for the next generation of STEM talent.

  • Embedding gender justice into the future of innovation.

DigitalFems and its fellow honorees are not only earning recognition—they’re building a more equitable tech culture from the ground up.
