DigitalFems Leads the Charge for Gender Equity in Catalonia’s Tech Sector

Barometre Report, The First Report in Catalunya, investigating data about women working in the technology industry.

The DonaTIC Barometer Report is the first report published in Catalonia that aims to study and analyze the situation of women technologists within ICT companies located in Catalonia.

The lack of labor representation and participation in the ICT sector of women is known, which responds to different motives and causes. This report, developed by DigitalFems and GenderDataLab for the Cercle Tecnològic, will provide us with a vision of the treatment that companies do to promote the presence of women in this masculinized sector:

  •  How many women exercise technical roles?
  •  Are there differences in the promotion of female talent, when there are women who exercise leadership roles?
  • Does the Catalan ICT Sector support diversity and conciliation policies?
  •  What are the most prominent gender gap indicators?

All these questions have been answered answered in the Baròmetre report of the DonaTic 2023, whose data can be consulted and downloaded openly in the OpenSource Dataset of the Cercle at GenderDataLab.org

Catalonia’s tech industry, just as the rest of other geographies, faces a significant gender gap: women represent only 31,8%% of total workforce, just behind the global average of 35%. A striking 40% of tech companies have no gender equality plan, and 43.4% acknowledge a gender pay gap, yet 8 out of 10 respondents deny it exists — revealing a deep perception gap. Just 20.8% of general management roles in tech companies are held by women. The reports show a direct correlation: companies led by women have significantly more women on staff (48%) than those led by men (17.3%).

These findings come from the Baròmetre DonaTIC reports, both authored by DigitalFems, which provide a critical analysis of gender disparities in the ICT sector. Despite tech being one of the fastest-growing sectors (9% of Catalonia’s GDP), gender parity remains far from reach.. Moreover, women are predominantly found in project management roles, with minimal representation in infrastructure development. As Catalonia, and the rest of the world, continues to evolve and become more a digital and technological, embracing diversity and inclusion is not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage. DigitalFems’ leadership in this arena sets a precedent for meaningful change

DigitalFems’ commitment to data-driven advocacy is reshaping the conversation around gender in tech. Our work not only highlights existing inequalities but also provides actionable recommendations to foster a more inclusive and equitable industry.
